Diet & Vet Care
As a breeder I have always fed my own hedgehogs adult cat food (not kitten food). I feed Purina Indoor Cat food, Purina Naturals and Fancy Feast. Cat food is high in protein and has always worked great for me and my hedgehogs:) Please choose your pets food wisely and when you have a good one picked out please stick with it. When you must switch food, do so gradually to avoid upset tummies. This can be hard on your hedgehog. Please always switch foods gradually. Hedgehogs are insectivores so bugs make great treats as well as a part of their daily diet.
I like the small meal worms best.. The large tend to bite and or pinch so mine don't seem to care for them. Remember to keep them in the fridge do they last longer and do not turn into beetles before you are able to use them all.
I like to keep Kaytee brand freeze dried mealworms on hand. These can be found in large bage, in the garden centers in the summer. I like to put them in a small bowl with just a little bit of water to juice them back up:) Disguard whatever is left the next day because if left in the cage they become extra stinky!!!
All hedgies are different and some DO need a higher fat diet than an indoor formula can provide. Indoor is created for cats that are indoor only and get very little exercise. Some hedgehogs have a more slender body styles and need a higher fat food than others. If your hedgies maintains a pear shape body on the indoor formula then keep them on that. If they have more of a slender body or look skinny AND not using the wheel (to explain being slender) then they are for sure in need of a higher fat content food. For those, I like to use foods that contain around 16%, staying away from kitten foods just in case of the milk content. Canned cat food should not be given long term so their teeth stay healthy. Wax worms are also high in fat and can be given to slender hogs. I use Purina or Friskies indoor cat food (both made by Purina) for all my chubby hogs, I use Purina Naturals for all the normal body type (not to big not to small) and I use Fancy Feast Savory Chicken and Turkey for my slender hogs for it's high fat content. Most hogs only need to be on a high fat diet for a small period of time so it is normally a temporary change in diet.
We all hope our pets never fall ill but if they do you want to be prepared for it.! Not all vets deal in exotics so PLEASE find a Vet who does NOW... Better safe than sorry:)
